Round About Thy Table - Psalm 128:1-4

Round About Thy Table - Psalm 128:1-4

INTRODUCTION

Two of the greatest treasures in godly homes are the family altar and the supper table. The family altar is a time for the family to get to know the Lord, and the family table is a time for the family to get to know each other. The psalmist speaks of the blessing of having children round about the table (Psalm 128:3). It may be thought that this is some other table, but the context of Psalm 128:2 is that of a meal. Historically, families saw great importance in gathering together around the table as much as possible. Now, each person grabs his or her food only to rush off to some other room for work or pleasure. This must be stopped and the family table time needs to be restored.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) One purpose of the home is for eating and drinking (1 Corinthians 11:22a, 34a). Job was thinking back to a time that made him happy (Job 29:2a, 5b). Mealtime is a time to be together. Keep the conversation pleasant. Do not speak of troubles. When we eat with the Lord, it will be a happy time (Revelation 19:9).
  • How often does your entire family gather around the table for a meal? Would you describe your family as close knit? Is it possible that the two are connected?
  • Do you haste to get done at the supper table, or do you use it as an opportunity to eat and enjoy your spouse and/or children? Are you willing to slow down and let God work in your home?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank God for giving you a family with which to eat.
  • Ask God to help you see the importance of family meals.
