Rebuking the Lord
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Many have erroneously assumed that the disciples readily accepted the gospel of the death, burial, and resurrection. When Simon Peter first heard the Lord teach on the subject, he immediately took the Lord and rebuked Him. In turn, the Lord Jesus rebuked Peter, going so far as to call him Satan. Peter rebuked the Lord because the Lord’s teaching did not line up with Peter’s plans. He had no authority for rebuking the Lord and should have submitted himself to the Lord’s teaching. Some things have changed, but some have not. Even today, believers rebuke the Lord in their responses to His working in their lives. They fail to realize their duty is to submit to the Lord.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Because the disciples were in a storm and were afraid, they asked the Lord if He cared. They should have known better (Mark 4:37-40 [37] And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
[38] And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
[39] And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
[40] And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Martha asked the Lord the same question (Luke 10:38-42 [38] Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. [40] But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. [41] And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: [42] But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
See All...). - What are some ways in which believers can rebuke the Lord? What does it suggest when we complain about something the Lord allows to enter our lives?
- What does it suggest about the condition of your heart when you begin to rebuke the Lord’s teaching and working in your life? How did this fare for Peter? How will it fare for you?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you accept His will in your life.
- Ask the Lord to soften your heart to His truth.
