Public Rebuke

Public Rebuke - 1 Timothy 5:20

INTRODUCTION

Many preachers have taken great delight in the admonition of 1 Timothy 5:20, but few have taken the time to consider that the context indicates the individual receiving rebuke is an elder (1 Timothy 5:17-19). It would also appear that the rebuke is for specific conditions. Paul informed Timothy that there are times a rebuke must be given in the presence of others. The purpose of such a rebuke is that others will witness the rebuke and fear making the same errors as the elder receiving the rebuke. Though a public rebuke is not a pleasant sight, Proverbs 27:5 says, "Open rebuke is better than secret love." There may also be conditions in which others must receive a public rebuke.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Some of God's people would come from far away to the temple at Jerusalem to give an offering to the Lord. They had different money that had to be changed to Hebrew money. Moneychangers were greedy and charged too much for this service. Jesus rebuked them publickly (Matthew 21:12-13).
  • Why should God’s people be careful about hastily rebuking others in public? What should we take into consideration before rebuking someone publickly?
  • Do some sins call for a private rebuke, while others call for a public rebuke? If so, what would be the distinguishing circumstances for each?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to give you wisdom as to how to rebuke others.
  • Ask the Lord to keep you from sins that would demand rebuke.
