Provoking the Lord to Anger
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The Lord redeemed Israel out of Egypt with the desire that they would worship Him. Instead, the nation of Israel turned to vanities and in doing so, they ignited the fire of God’s anger (Deuteronomy 32:21-22 [21] They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
[22] For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
See All...). In turn, the Lord said He would provoke Israel to jealousy with a people "which are not a people." Just as the nation of Israel would consider gentiles to be a vain people, Israel provoked the Lord to anger by their vanity. The Lord expects a redeemed people to flee vanity and give themselves wholly to His work, worship, and will. Now, the Lord has redeemed a people, both Jew and Gentile, "for His name" (Acts 15:14Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
See All...), and He expects no less from them.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God's will for Uzziah was for him to be king. For the most part, he was a good king. But he provoked the Lord to anger when he stepped out of His will and thought he could do the work of the priests. Read what happened to him in 2 Chronicles 26:4And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did.
See All..., 16-21. - The Lord redeemed us with the precious blood of His Son. How could it grieve Him when we seek after vanity and disregard His will for our lives?
- Vanity takes, and gives nothing in return. The Lord is able to give far more in return than man could ever give unto Him. To which are you giving yourself?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to show you when you are provoking Him with vanity.
- Thank the Lord for His longsuffering.
