Nakedness and Shame - Genesis 2:21-25
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Adam and Eve, before the fall of man, were naked and rightfully unashamed (Genesis 2:25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
See All...). The Bible indicates that the first notable difference following the fall came when the couple felt shame over their nakedness (Genesis 3:10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
See All...). This shame led them to cover themselves with aprons sewn from fig leaves (Genesis 3:7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
See All...). From that day forward, nakedness and shame have been inseparable. In Exodus 32, Aaron led the people of God in idolatrous worship which included dancing and nakedness. In that passage, the Bible says, “Aaron had made them naked unto their shame” (Exodus 32:25And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
See All...). The Lord reiterates this affiliation in a warning to the Laodiceans by saying that they should be clothed lest the shame of their nakedness appear (Revelation 3:18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
See All...).
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): David sent servants to comfort Hanun when his father died, but Hanun thought the men were spies. Read what he did in 1 Chronicles 19:4-5 [4] Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
[5] Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
See All.... The men were not properly clothed and felt ashamed. The lesson we should learn would be to dress properly. - (For everyone): Adam and Eve, in their innocence, had no concept of any shame associated with nakedness. When they lost their innocence, they understood immediately that nakedness was to be covered.
- How can Adam and Eve’s innocence be like that of small children? How can parents protect their children as they grow older and lose that initial innocence?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to teach you what nakedness is.
- Ask the Lord to help you please Him in every aspect of your life.
