Murmuring Breeds Lies

Murmuring Breeds Lies - Deuteronomy 1:27

INTRODUCTION

In Deuteronomy 7:7-8, the Lord expressed His great love for the nation of Israel. In the midst of this declaration, the Lord provided reasons why He placed His love upon the nation. In Deuteronomy 1:27, the people began to murmur and their murmurings bred lies. They stated that the Lord brought them out of Egypt to destroy them because of His great hatred for them. Their statements could not have been any further from the truth. So it is in most circumstances where people begin to murmur. The truth gets exaggerated and corrupted altogether. The fabrication of lies helps the murmurer to feel better about voicing the complaint. The truth is usually not worth murmuring about.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Read Numbers 21:5. The people spoke against God and Moses by complaining there was no bread. They lied because in the very same verse they showed their wicked hearts. God had given them bread, but they hated it. The Lord was very displeased with their murmuring (Numbers 21:6).
  • Have you ever heard someone say, "We do not have anything to eat"? Was that true? Perhaps, but probably not. Why did the person speak a lie rather than the truth?
  • Do you lie when you murmur? Does the Lord approve of lying under these circumstances? Does the Lord approve of your murmuring? Are you willing to repent?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to forgive you for murmuring.
  • Ask the Lord to convict you the next time you begin to murmur.
