Mass of Meaningless Madness

Whilst sorting out my book case over the recent holiday period I was struck by just how many books I have that I've never read and got thinking about just how long it will take me to read them all. I guess if I did read them all I would never need to buy another book again.

I have books about all sorts of subjects, yet most of them are written about just one Book...the Holy Bible. I wonder how much more profitable it would be for me to spend my time reading the Bible rather than books about the Bible. I wonder how much closer to the Lord I would be? How much more willing to serve Him I would be? How different my Christian life would be?

Psalm 119 is all about the written word of God and contains some wonderful counsel regarding it for the Christian. We should:

  • Take heed of it - Psalm 119:9
  • Trust it - Psalm 119:42
  • Love it - Psalm 119:140
  • Meditate in it - Psalm 119:148
  • Stand in Awe of it - Psalm 119:161
  • Rejoice at it - Psalm 119:162
  • Speak of it - Psalm 119:172

There have been some wonderful books written over the years by some wonderful men of God and many people have been blessed by them. However, we must make sure we don't replace the time spent reading the Bible with reading other books, no matter how good they might be. As the Lord Jesus Himself said,

"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." John 5:39
