The Book of Numbers 0002 - Lesson 1

Scripture Passage:
Numbers 7:1-89

Chapter 7 (There is currently no audio for this lesson.)

The Sacrifices of God’s People

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. Second Longest Chapter in the Bible Using Number of Verses with 89
      1. Psalm 119 is the longest.  It deals with the word of God or God’s precious gift to man.
      2. Numbers 7 is the next longest.  It deals with man’s gifts to God.
      3. We can see the order of importance.  The most important gifts are the ones given by God to man, but God also shows us the importance of His people giving back to Him.
      4. This chapter could have been a much shorter chapter, but God tells of each tribe’s offering even though the offering is exactly the same.  This shows us that God is interested in what each individual is willing to give to Him from their heart.
        1. Luke 21:1-3:  Jesus sees “rich men” casting their “gifts” into the treasury.  Who are they?  What did they give?  We know not.  A “certain poor widow” cast in her “two mites.”  Notice that the Lord takes time to tell us what she gave and then even boasts on her gift.
        2. Matthew 26:7-13:  A woman brings an alabaster box of very precious ointment and pours it upon the Lord’s head.  Of this gift the Lord says, “Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.”
    2. Order of Chapters
      1. Numbers 5 deals with Separation from the world.
      2. Numbers 6 deals with Separation unto God.
      3. Numbers 7 deals with Sacrificial giving of God’s people.
      4. When a person begins to separate from the world and separate unto God, then they will out of the abundance of their heart begin to give sacrifices to God.
  2. THE OBEDIENCE OF GOD’S PEOPLE (Numbers 7:1-3)
    1. The Obedience of Moses (Numbers 7:1)
      1. Moses had fully set up the tabernacle.
      2. He had anointed and sanctified:
        1. The tabernacle
        2. The instruments
        3. The altar
        4. The vessels
      3. The obedience of Moses brings forth something else.
        1. Notice the phrase “it came to pass on the day.”
        2. Because of the obedience of Moses, we are going to see something else wonderful happen.
        3. So it is today.  We should not expect anything wonderful to happen in our homes, churches or communities until we first obey God.
    2. The Obedience of the Princes (Numbers 7:2-3)
      1. The princes were representatives of each tribe.
      2. They brought their offering before the Lord, before the tabernacle.
      3. Their offering
        1. Six covered wagons
        2. Twelve oxen
      4. Once again we should notice that the sacrificial giving of God’s people occurred on the day that Moses had fully obeyed the Lord.  Their obedience depended upon the obedience of Moses, for how could they offer something for the work of the tabernacle without a tabernacle?
      5. So it is with our obedience.
        1. Moses, by setting up the tabernacle, had prepared the way for man to approach God.  The captain of our salvation fully obeyed the commandment of the Father by the sacrificial giving of His life and by His resurrection and ascension.
        2. Moses’ obedience opened the way for the people to obey God with sacrificial giving.  When our Lord ascended to the Father, He sent the Comforter, without which we would not be capable of obeying the commandments given to us.
        3. Had Moses not obeyed, the people could not obey.  Had the Son of God not obeyed, we could not obey.
  3. GOD’S ACCEPTANCE OF THE SACRIFICES (Numbers 7:4-5)
    1. God Accepts Sincere Sacrifices – take it of them (Numbers 7:4-5).
    2. The Use of the Sacrifices – to do the service of the tabernacle (Numbers 6:5)
  4. THE DIVIDING OF THE GIFTS (Numbers 7:6-9)
    1. Gershonites (Numbers 7:7)
      1. They were given two wagons and four oxen.
      2. Their burden was the curtains and hangings of the structure (Numbers 4:24-27).
    2. Merarites (Numbers 7:8)
      1. They were given four wagons and eight oxen.
      2. Their burden was the boards, beams and heavier portions of the sanctuary (Numbers 4:31-32).
    3. Kohathites (Numbers 7:9)
      1. They were given none.
      2. Their burden was the bearing of the ark, the candlestick, the table, and the altars.
      3. The burden belonging to them had to be bore upon their shoulders.
      4. Understanding this sheds light on a future sin of the Israelites.
        1. David desired to bring the ark of God to his home (1 Chronicles 13:2-3).
        2. The thing was right in the eyes of all of the people (1 Chronicles 13:4).
        3. They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab.  Uzza(h) and Ahio drove the cart (2 Samuel 6:3; 1 Chronicles 13:7).
        4. David and all Israel sang and played “with all their might” (2 Samuel 6:5; 1 Chronicles 13:8).
        5. The oxen stumbled and the ark began to fall, but Uzza(h) put forth his hand to stop it (2 Samuel 6:6; 1 Chronicles 13:9).
        6. It displeased the Lord and He killed Uzza(h) (2 Samuel 6:7; 1 Chronicles 13:10).
        7. David was displeased and wondered, “How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?”  (2 Samuel 6:9; 1 Chronicles 13:11-12)
        8. They learned this method from the Philistines (1 Samuel 6:2, 7, 8).
        9. Applications
          1. The original desire was a godly desire to bring home the ark of God.  Many today err concerning the scriptures, but the desire may be a godly desire like reaching young people.
          2. The method that was used was right in the eyes of the people, but it had been devised by the Philistines and not by God.
          3. David and all Israel played with all their might but God was not concerned that they gave it their best for it was not His method.
          4. Uzza(h) was destroyed when trying to do a good thing all because this was not God’s way.  People all over the world are “doing a good thing” but they and their families are being destroyed because they are using the Philistines’ methods.
          5. David only wondered how to bring the ark home, because he did not seek the answers in the word of God.  We too can find the answers for our methods in God’s word.
      5. Thoughts concerning the burden of the Kohathites
        1. The Kohathites were not to occupy their time wishing God had given them what He gave to the Gershonites or the Merarites.
        2. The burden of the Kohathites may seem rough, but we must remember that the glory is always much greater than the burden.  It wasn’t the Merarites or the Gershonites who stepped into the Jordan River and saw the water part so that the Israelites could pass over on dry ground (Joshua 3:8-17).  It wasn’t the Merarites and Gershonites whose feet left the Jordan and saw it return again to its overflow state (Joshua 4:18).
        3. The Kohathites bore the most holy things.  They carried the instruments that reconciled the people with God.  We carry the most precious gift available today in our hands.  It is the word of God.  It is fully capable of showing a man how to be reconciled with God.
        4. The Kohathites were to carry these items to wherever the presence of God led them.  We too ought to carry the message of reconciliation wherever God would lead us.
  5. THE OFFERINGS OF ISRAEL (Numbers 7:10-88)
    1. The Purpose (Numbers 7:10-11)
      1. For the dedicating of the altar
      2. Anything that is going to be used for God must first be dedicated.
    2. The Sacrifices (Numbers 7:12-83)
      1. Meat offering
        1. One silver charger (130 shekels weight)
        2. One silver bowl (70 shekels weight)
        3. Both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil
        4. Note:  Notice that the meat offering did not have any meat in it.  Hence, the Bible deniers will try to say that this should be the “meal offering” or the “grain offering,” but the word meat in the Bible does not necessarily mean meat as we think of it today.  Meat was the main part of a meal.  For example, in Genesis 1:30, God gave Adam and Eve “every green herb for meat.”  In other places bread is the meat.  By changing the meat offering to something else the connection to John 4:34 is lost.  (See Appendix Sheet A4 below)
      2. Burnt offering
        1. One spoon of ten shekels of gold full of incense
        2. One young bullock
        3. One ram
        4. One lamb of the first year
      3. Sin offering
        1. One kid of the goats
      4. Peace offering
        1. Two oxen
        2. Five rams
        3. Five he goats
        4. Five lambs of the first year
      5. Note:  50 shekels equal approximately 1 1/4 lbs.
      6. These offerings cover four of the five major offerings mentioned in Leviticus.  The only offering missing is the trespass offering.  The general purpose of the trespass offering is the individual sins or trespasses.  They would not have needed to offer these until an individual sin had been committed.  The sin offering generally takes care of the defilement of sin or the sin nature.  For example, a woman who has a child is required to offer a sin offering in Leviticus 12 because of defilement, even though having a baby is not a sin.
    3. The Days (Numbers 7:12-83)
      1. Day 1 – Nahshon of the tribe of Judah
      2. Day 2 – Nethaneel of the tribe of Issachar
      3. Day 3 – Eliab of the tribe of Zebulun
      4. Day 4 – Elizur of the tribe of Reuben
      5. Day 5 – Shelumiel of the tribe of Simeon
      6. Day 6 – Eliasaph of the tribe of Gad
      7. Day 7 – Elishama of the tribe of Ephraim
      8. Day 8 – Gamaliel of the tribe of Manasseh
      9. Day 9 – Abidan of the tribe of Benjamin
      10. Day 10 – Ahiezer of the tribe of Dan
      11. Day 11 – Pagiel of the tribe of Asher
      12. Day 12 – Ahira of the tribe of Naphtali
      13. Note:  This order of offerings is the same order of the march.
    4. The Sum of the Offerings (Numbers 7:84-88)
      1. Twelve chargers of silver x 130 shekels
      2. Twelve silver bowls x 70 shekels
      3. Twelve spoons of gold full of incense x 10 shekels
      4. Burnt offering
        1. Twelve bullocks
        2. Twelve rams
        3. Twelve lambs of the first year
      5. Sin offering
        1. Twelve kids of the goats
      6. Peace offering
        1. Twenty four bullocks
        2. Sixty rams
        3. Sixty he goats
        4. Sixty lambs of the first year
  6. THE VOICE OF THE LORD (Numbers 7:89)
    1. According to God’s Promise (Exodus 25:22)
    2. After the Obedience of God’s People (John 14:21)
