How to Teach the Bible 0001 - Lesson 3

The Importance of Teaching

Its Effect

  1. IT IDENTIFIES
    1. It Unifies.
      1. True believers with Christ (Acts 4:1-13; Acts 11:26)
      2. True believers with true believers (Acts 2:42-47)
    2. It Divides.
      1. True believers from unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14-17; 2 Timothy 3:1-7)
      2. Godly believers from carnal believers (Romans 16:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15; 1 Timothy 6:3-5)
  2. IT PRESERVES (Ephesians 4:11-12)
    1. Individual Believers – “the perfecting of the saints” (Ephesians 4:12)
      1. It keeps believers from sin (2 Corinthians 6:14-17).
      2. It keeps believers from false doctrine (1 Timothy 4:13-16).
      3. It strengthens believers.
        1. In doctrine
        2. In practice
    2. The Truth Itself – “the work of the ministry” (Ephesians 4:12)
      1. Biblical teaching distinguishes between false doctrine and sound doctrine.
      2. Biblical teaching passes the truth from one generation to the next.
    3. Individual Congregations - "the edifying of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12)
      1. The word edifying is connected to building.
      2. The stronger that we build churches with the teaching of the word of God, the stronger that they will be when the storms of sin and false doctrine beat against them.

The Importance of Teaching

Its Condemnation

  1. A DESIRE TO TEACH
    1. A Common Desire (1 Timothy 1:7)
      1. Certain men from Judaea (Acts 15:1-2)
      2. Common among the Jews (Romans 2:17-20; Titus 1:10-11)
      3. Can be spiritual or carnal
        1. Spiritual (Hebrews 5:12)
        2. Carnal (Titus 1:10-11)
    2. Must Be Done in Order
      1. The followers of Christ
        1. First called disciples which means students
        2. Later called apostles which means sent ones
      2. Exemplified by Paul and Timothy (2 Timothy 2:2)
      3. Patterned in scripture
        1. As the student
          1. Begins with the milk (1 Peter 2:2-3; 1 Corinthians 3:1-2)
          2. Grows to the meat (Isaiah 28:9; Hebrews 5:14)
        2. As the teacher
          1. Receives the meat (Hebrews 5:12-14; John 3:10)
          2. Begins teaching the milk (2 Timothy 2:2)
          3. Grows to teaching the meat
  2. THE CONDEMNATION OF FALSE TEACHING
    1. The Level of Condemnation
      1. The greater condemnation (James 3:1)
      2. The greater damnation (Mark 12:35-40)
      3. Swift destruction (2 Peter 2:1)
      4. The end is destruction (Philippians 3:17-19).
    2. The Source of Condemnation
      1. For the word taught
        1. We often rejoice in the gaining of rewards for our disciples who in turn disciple others.
        2. We rarely consider that we must likewise be accountable for false teaching that is passed from one generation to another.
      2. For the people taught
        1. When you teach, you invest yourself in the life of another.
        2. When your students go into false teaching and preaching, you as the teacher will bear some of this burden.
