Loyalty Killed Uriah - 2 Samuel 11:6-13

Loyalty Killed Uriah - 2 Samuel 11:6-13

INTRODUCTION

Loyalty is a godly trait, and like many godly traits, it often brings with it difficulty. David sinned against the Lord in the matter with Bathsheba. In order to cover for his wickedness, he sent for his faithful soldier Uriah. David’s desire was to send Uriah home to Bathsheba so that the sin of David and Bathsheba would be covered. Uriah, being the faithful soldier that he was, refused to go home and enjoy the comforts of being with his wife while his fellow soldiers were enduring the hardness of battle. Instead, Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house. This loyalty caused David to reevaluate his plan. He determined to send Uriah back to the battle and ultimately to his death. Loyalty killed Uriah!

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Many men in the Bible lost their lives because they were loyal to God. A few examples are John the Baptist (Luke 9:9), Stephen (Acts 7:57-59, James (Acts 12:1-2), and Paul (2 Timothy 4:6).
  • What would have happened had Uriah been unfaithful to his fellow soldiers and David? How would we think differently of Uriah if he had proven disloyal?
  • Urias is mentioned in the genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:6). What is so unique about this? Why do you think the Lord put him in the genealogy of Christ?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank the Lord for the faithful example of Uriah.
  • Ask the Lord to teach you that loyalty is worth the cost.
