Loyalty Gives Honour - 2 Samuel 18:1-4
See All...
INTRODUCTION
David’s men were loyal in spite of the rebellion of others. Even though Absalom rose up in rebellion, causing David and his men to leave Jerusalem (2 Samuel 15:13-15 [13] And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
[14] And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
[15] And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.

They were ready to give their lives; but, in no way were they ready for him to give his. Their loyalty to David caused them to think more highly of his needs, wants, and well-being than their own. Unlike many of the kingdoms of the world, the soldiers were more concerned about the life of the king and the condition of his kingdom.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) One time when the Philistines warred with Israel, David went to battle but felt faint. When one of the sons of the giant attacked him, Abishai came to his rescue. His men reminded him that he was too important to perish in battle (2 Samuel 21:15-17 [15] Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.
[16] And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
[17] But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
See All...). - How did the loyalty of David’s followers cause them to honour him? How would your loyalty to the Lord cause you to honour Him?
- In what ways would it be proper for your loyalty to cause you to honour others? How could this be taken too far and become a problem? To whom is your priority in loyalty?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Thank the Lord for the example given by David’s men.
- Ask the Lord to help you see the importance of loyalty.
