Live What You Teach
See All...
INTRODUCTION
It is easy to tell others what to do and how to do it, but it is much more difficult to follow one’s own teaching. In fact, it appears to be human nature to expect from others what one cannot expect from himself. This very issue was discussed in the council of Acts 15. Peter concluded that it was not right to ask others to bear a yoke that previous generations had been unable to bear (Acts 15:10Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
See All...). Believers should not, however, change their teaching to fit their obedience. Rather, believers ought to obey the truth and teach it to others. How many preachers and teachers have spoken about subject matters only to refuse to obey the very truths they taught?
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Paul told Timothy not only to teach, but to be a good example (1 Timothy 4:11-12 [11] These things command and teach.
[12] Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
See All...). When we do wrong, we may cause others not to believe in God or to think that they don't have to do what He says. King David's sin gave God's enemies great occasion to speak against Him (2 Samuel 12:14Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
See All...). - What truths have you taught to others only to disregard them yourself? How does this harm those to whom you initially taught the truth?
- How many people have been turned away from the truths you taught because of your own disobedience to the truth? What will you do to mend what you have broken?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you live what you teach.
- Ask the Lord to make you an example for other believers.
