Let No Man Despise Thy Youth
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Respect is not inherited; it is earned. When writing to young Timothy, Paul admonished him to "let no man despise" his youth. In other words, Timothy was responsible for how others handled his youth. Paul’s advice for Timothy was for him to be an example to other believers in every facet of life. If he did that, no man would despise his youth. They would begin to see Timothy as a man and would have no trouble following his leadership. In the beginning, David was disdained because of his youth (1 Samuel 17:33And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
See All..., 42), but when he defeated Goliath and gave Israel the victory, he was given the respect of a hero of war. David did not show up expecting respect, he earned it by his actions.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) If you, as a child, want others to know you love the Lord, then you need to act like it. How do you behave at home, at church, in Sunday School, in publick? Consider these verses: Psalm 101:2I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
See All...a; 2 Thessalonians 3:7For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
See All...; Titus 2:7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
See All...a. - Why do young people become frustrated when they do not receive respect from adults? Is it possible they think they are entitled to respect regardless of their actions?
- What are some ways you could keep others from despising your youth? What would you need to change in order to earn more respect from those around you?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you earn respect rather than expecting it.
- Ask God to give you wisdom beyond your years.
