Leaders Have Followers
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The disciples had a responsibility to do the work of God, but Simon Peter decided to go fishing. When he made his decision, the disciples that were with him followed. The Lord had admonished Peter to strengthen his brethren (Luke 22:32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
See All...), but under Peter’s leadership the disciples became weak through disobedience. Perhaps Peter never desired to be a leader, but he was the natural leader at this point. When he made the wrong decision, others were affected. A leader who has no followers is no leader at all. Therefore, leaders must consider that whatever direction they choose to go, some will be travelling the same path in their footsteps.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God made Jeroboam king over the ten tribes of Israel. Instead of leading the people to worship the true God, he chose to set up two calves of gold and told the people that these were the gods which brought them out of Egypt. His decision caused the people to eventually be taken captive out of their land, never to return.
- Who is following in your footsteps? What kind of influence are you? Would it please the Lord if they followed the same path that you are travelling?
- Have you made wrong decisions only to find that others are following in your footsteps? What can you do to encourage them to go a different direction?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you lead others the right way.
- Ask the Lord to help your leadership strengthen other believers.
HYMN
Have Thine Own Way, Lord!
