Intermeddling with All Wisdom - Proverbs 18:1
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The scripture never offers a positive viewpoint of meddling. One might consider intermeddling with wisdom as a good thing, yet the scripture teaches otherwise. Today’s passage states that a man through desire seeks and intermeddles with “all” wisdom. According to James, there are two major types of wisdom, earthly (James 3:15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
See All...) and heavenly (James 3:17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
See All...). According to Proverbs 18:1Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
See All..., the man intermeddles with all wisdom, including the earthly. He separates himself from the pure truth and opens his mind to all the various types of wisdom that the world offers. Just as the scriptural teaching on meddling in other places, the man has no business involving himself with the world’s wisdom.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): God made Solomon the wisest man that ever lived (1 Kings 3:12Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
See All...). Toward the end of his life, he forsook God’s wisdom and turned toward worldly wisdom thinking it was acceptable to worship other gods. The Lord was angry with him (1 Kings 11:4-9 [4] For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. [5] For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. [6] And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father. [7] Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. [8] And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. [9] And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
See All...). - (For everyone): Man should involve himself only in God’s wisdom. Read Romans 16:19For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
See All.... How does this verse confirm that man should not intermeddle with “all” wisdom? - Do you know someone who has separated himself for the purpose of studying and meddling in the world’s wisdom? How has this person benefited? Is that person you?
