Inherited Loyalty - Numbers 27:20
See All...
INTRODUCTION
When Moses placed his honour on Joshua, he did so to encourage the obedience and loyalty of the people of God. As they had honoured the Lord, they had honoured Moses. Now, Moses needed the people to be loyal to Joshua, as they had been to him. Perhaps men could have risen up against Joshua, understanding that he had not done enough to merit their loyalty, but Moses had placed his own honour on his minister Joshua. Apparently, the people got the message, because the people answered Joshua by saying, "According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses" (Joshua 1:17According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) We know we ought to honour and obey God. But we also need to honour and obey those whom God has chosen to be over us. This includes pastors (Acts 20:28Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
See All...; Hebrews 13:7Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
See All...) and people in office (Romans 13:1-2 [1] Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. [2] Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
See All...; 1 Peter 2:17Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
See All...). - To some degree, all loyalty owed to man is inherited by God placing His honour upon His creation. Do you honour those whom you should honour? Are you loyal to them?
-
Why were the people loyal to Joshua? To what extent were they loyal (see Joshua 1:16-18 [16] And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.
[17] According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.
[18] Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
See All...)? If loyalty to man does not conflict with loyalty to God, to what extent should we be loyal?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to give you wisdom on when to be loyal.
- Thank the Lord for giving us people worthy of loyalty.
