If Ye Bite and Devour One Another
See All...
INTRODUCTION
If you bite your food enough times it will break down into small pieces and disappear into your stomach. In our passage, the apostle Paul informs us that the same truth exists in our relationship with one another. If we bite and devour one another, we will eventually consume one another. Many believers have dropped out of the Lord’s service and quit going to the house of God because the people of God devoured them with words until they were consumed. Just as food can only withstand so many bites before it is consumed, other believers can only take so much backbiting before they are weakened to the point of desiring to quit. As the people of God, we are responsible for strengthening each other and will surely answer to God for backbiting.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God tells us to speak evil of no man (Titus 3:2To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
See All...a) and especially not of our church family (James 4:11Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
See All...a). God wants our speech to instruct and to help improve others in serving the Lord (Ephesians 4:29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
See All...). - Have you ever known someone who quit serving the Lord because of the backbiting of other people? Did they seem strong in the beginning and able to withstand the criticisms?
- Ultimately, each person is responsible for his walk before God. Yet, is it possible that backbiters will hold some responsibility for causing others to be consumed?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to strengthen you when others seek to harm you.
- Ask God to help you strengthen those who have been slandered.
