I Have Respect unto Thy Word - Psalm 119:6, 15, 117
See All..., 15, 117
INTRODUCTION
Respect is to look at two different things and prefer one above the other. If there is anything in this world that is worthy of man’s respect, it is the written word of God. It is far superior to any other book to which it has or ever will be compared. The psalmist understood this and stated emphatically that he would "have respect unto" the Lord’s ways (Psalm 119:15I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.
See All...) and His statutes continually (Psalm 119:117Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
See All...). With this being the case, the psalmist was confident he would "be safe" (Psalm 119:117Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
See All...), and would "not be ashamed" (Psalm 119:6Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
See All...). The Bible ought to be the source of man’s respect, being preferred above any authority seeking to dethrone the scriptures.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) We need to respect God's word because of what it is (Psalm 12:6-7 [6] The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
[7] Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
See All...; Psalm 119:140Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.
See All..., 160; Proverbs 30:5Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
See All...a) and what it can do (Hebrews 4:12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
See All...; James 1:21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
See All...b). Peter was glad he had respect unto God's word (Luke 5:4-6 [4] Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. [5] And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. [6] And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
See All...). - Anytime we follow something other than the word of God, we are actually disrespecting the scriptures. Do you have respect unto the Lord’s commandments?
- Name some people in scripture who seemed to have respect unto the Lord’s commandments. Name some who did not. To which group would you be more similar?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to give you a greater respect unto His word.
- Ask God to teach you the importance of respecting scripture.
