How Long Will Ye Love Vanity?

How Long Will Ye Love Vanity? - Psalm 4:2

INTRODUCTION

Vanity is meaningless and empty, but men love it. It fills their imaginations (Psalm 2:1), their thoughts (Psalm 94:11), and their speech (Psalm 144:8, 11). It consumes man to the point where he will weary himself for vanity (Habakkuk 2:13). Men will spend a brief moment, if that, in the eternal word of God while spending hours reading the internet and newspapers. He fears to speak of the righteousness of God, but demonstrates boldness when speaking on behalf of his favorite vanity. He forgets to do something for the Lord, but will spend an entire day pondering the vanity that he is going to enjoy later in the day. It is no wonder man stays tired, he is wearying himself for vanity.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Children spend much time focusing on the world's heroes that are not real. Do you realize one day we will meet the real heroes of the Bible such as David, Daniel, Moses, Joseph, Noah, etc.? Why not read their stories and act them out.
  • What topics consume your thoughts and your speech? Are these topics vain or do they bring glory to God? How can you turn your vain thoughts into thoughts that are profitable?
  • Do you weary yourself for vanity? Do you weary yourself to the point where you cannot find the time and strength to serve the Lord? How does the Lord feel about this?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to help you give yourself to things that are profitable.
  • Ask the Lord to convict you about loving vanity.

HYMN

My Jesus, I Love Thee
