Heeding the Wrong Counsel - Psalm 1:1

Heeding the Wrong Counsel - Psalm 1:1

INTRODUCTION

The scripture offers many examples of those who suffered the consequences of choosing to follow ungodly counsel. As children of God, it is imperative that we do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Following the wrong counsel results in severe consequences. For example, Rehoboam in 1 Kings chapter 12 sought counsel from both the older men who had served his father and the younger men who were his peers. However, he chose to follow the counsel of his peers while refusing the counsel and wisdom of the older men. The unwise counsel resulted in splitting the kingdom with the vast majority following Jeroboam as their new king. Jereboam unfortunately led many of the Israelites into pagan worship (1 Kings 12:25-30).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): You and your friends are hungry and walk by a neighbour's yard where there is an apple tree. Tom says, “Let's go get an apple. They can't use all of them and they won't mind.” Joe says, “But they aren't ours. That's stealing! We should ask first.” Whose advice should you follow? Why?
  • (For everyone): Can you think of some ungodly counsel that you received? What would have happened if you had followed that advice? What things would be different in your life now?
  • How can we determine if counsel is godly or not? What should we do when we receive counsel that does not align with the word of God?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to protect you from ungodly counsel.
  • Ask God to give you wisdom to help you follow wise counsel.
