Grace unto the Humble - James 4:6
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The Bible associates several qualities to the truly humble person. The book of James lists a few of these prominent traits as follows. The humble man submits to the will of God (James 4:7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
See All...). Additionally, he repents of his sins (James 4:8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
See All...) and mourns over his disobedience (James 4:9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
See All...). He refuses to speak evil of his brother (James 4:11Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
See All...), but rather chooses to leave judgment to the Lord because He is the righteous Judge (James 4:12There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
See All...). He refuses to boast about what he is doing (James 4:13-16 [13] Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
[14] Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
[15] For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
[16] But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
See All...) because he knows that his failure to do right is a sin (James 4:17Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
See All...). Yet, the greatest truth concerning the humble man is not what he does or gives for God, but what God gives to him. The Bible says that God gives grace to the humble and resists the proud (1 Peter 5:5-6 [5] Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
[6] Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
See All...). Think about this profound truth. God gives a man what he needs if that man will simply remain humble.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): A friend repeatedly treats you mean. You do not have to continue to play with him, but if you talk badly about him to others, you are trying to hurt him. This behaviour displeases the Lord. Pray for your friend that God will teach him to do right.
- (For everyone): Do your actions resemble the qualities of a humble person? Do you quickly repent of your sins and mourn over them? Do you try not to boast of your abilities and efforts? Do you understand that the Lord is righteous in all His doings and knows your heart better than you know it?
- God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Often this world resists the humble while exalting those with a proud spirit. Who are you seeking to please? Would you rather have favour with the Lord or with man?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to keep you humble.
- Ask God to show you the condition of your heart.
