God’s Dealings with Rebels - Joshua 22:18
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Sin cannot go unnoticed. If the Lord is just, and He is, He must mete out consequences for rebellion. The biblical descriptions of the Lord’s reaction to rebellion varies from "he will be wroth" (Joshua 22:18But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

See All...) to "I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee" (Exodus 33:5For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
See All...) to "I will purge out from among you the rebels" (Ezekiel 20:38And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
See All...) to "I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings" (Malachi 2:2If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
See All...). Though there are variations in response, the constant truth remains that the Lord hates rebellion and responds with judgment.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God loves His children and wants to bless them, but He won't let them get by with rebellion (Psalm 81:10-16 [10] I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
[11] But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
[12] So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
[13] Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
[14] I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
[15] The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.
[16] He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.
See All...). He longed for His people (Israel) to do right, but they chose rebellion (2 Chronicles 36:15-17 [15] And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: [16] But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. [17] Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
See All...). - How should parents respond to rebellious children? How should employers respond to rebellious employees? How should the law of the land respond to rebels? How should the Lord respond?
- Have you rebelled against the Lord? Has He responded with chastening in order to get your attention? Have you yielded to His chastening?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to give you a submissive will.
- Ask the Lord to help you respond when He chastens.
