For Envy They Delivered Him - Matthew 27:18
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The greatest enemy of the Lord Jesus was not the common man, nor was it Rome, but it was the very religious leaders who were charged with maintaining the spiritual purity of the people of God. Why would religious leaders have conflict with the one who wrote the dictates for the very religion they claimed to defend? Envy! According to John 11:48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
See All..., the religious determined that they could not allow Jesus to continue teaching, preaching, and ministering to others. If they did, all men would believe on Him, and the Romans would come and take away their place and nation. They could not allow this to happen. What would they do to keep their place and nation? Whatever it would take to keep it.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Satan was full of pride and envy. He wanted to be God but was unsuccessful (Ezekiel 28:14-15 [14] Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
[15] Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
See All...; Isaiah 14:12-15 [12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! [13] For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. [15] Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
See All...). He tried to destroy Jesus (Matthew 2:16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
See All...; Luke 4:28-30 [28] And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, [29] And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. [30] But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
See All...; Luke 22:3-4 [3] Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. [4] And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
See All...; John 19:15-16 [15] But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. [16] Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
See All...). Again, he was unsuccessful (Acts 10:39-42 [39] And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: [40] Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; [41] Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. [42] And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
See All...). - How far did the religious leaders go to protect their seat of authority in Israel? How did Pilate know that they delivered Jesus unto him because of envy?
- To what extremes will men go because of envy? What are some of these things you might remember from the Bible? What are some of the things you might remember from recent news?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you see the wickedness of envy.
- Ask God to help you repent of any envy present in your heart.
