Envy, the Rottenness of the Bones - Proverbs 14:30

Envy, the Rottenness of the Bones - Proverbs 14:30

INTRODUCTION

Physically speaking, a sound heart (Proverbs 14:30) and blood (Leviticus 17:11) are the life of the flesh. Without these, a man cannot survive. In like manner, much emphasis is placed on the importance of sound bone structure. A man who has problems with his bone strength will be greatly hindered in his quality of life. According to the Bible, envy is the rottenness of the bones. As bone strength declines, an individual becomes prone to falls and injury. In like manner, as a person allows envy to take its root in his heart, he loses his stability and becomes prone to fall and personal harm. If envy is not repented of, it will ultimately lead to spiritual death.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Absalom's pride caused him to envy his father's position as king. He spoke against his father, stole the hearts of the people, and prepared an army with intent to kill his own father. Even though he appeared strong on the outside, his heart was not right with God (Proverbs 6:12-19) and he died in battle.
  • How has envy weakened your walk with the Lord? How long have you allowed it to go unrestrained? Will you allow it to continue to harm you?
  • If you had a bone disease would you seek treatment in order to help your quality of life? What would you do if you had a spiritual bone disease?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you avoid the sin of envy.
  • Ask God to protect your walk with Him.
