David, a Man of Loyalty - 1 Samuel 24:1-13

David, a Man of Loyalty - 1 Samuel 24:1-13

INTRODUCTION

Men often remember David’s failures, but David is a wonderful example of loyalty. One might think that Saul did not deserve David’s loyalty, in fact, some of David’s men held to this belief, but David felt otherwise. David had the opportunity to kill Saul, an opportunity that Saul attempted to seize against David on multiple occasions, but he refused to stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed. Privily, David cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe, but immediately the Lord smote his heart. His godly character overrode any personal frustrations with the man who sought his personal harm. David’s men were prepared for action, but he stayed them because of loyalty.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) We may not like the people who are over us. They may not even love God. But He still expects us to honour them when possible (Titus 3:1; 1 Peter 2:13-14, 18). Joseph, Nehemiah, and Daniel worked for pagan kings, yet they practiced Titus 3:2a.
  • Did Saul deserve David’s loyalty? If not, why was David loyal to him? What did David do that brought conviction to his heart? What would it take to bring conviction to your heart?
  • David’s men were loyal to David to the point that they were ready to kill Saul. How would David’s loyalty to Saul be a wonderful example and edification to his own men?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to teach you what it means to be loyal.
  • Ask God for strength of character.
