Crucified with Thieves - Matthew 27:33-38

Crucified with Thieves - Matthew 27:33-38

INTRODUCTION

Crucifixion was a gruesome form of capital punishment. When the Lord Jesus was crucified, he was crucified alongside two thieves. Crucifixion was the just desert of a thief (Luke 23:41). Barabbas, another thief, was condemned and should have been the third thief crucified (John 18:40). Instead, the people determined to release a thief and crucify the giver of all things. Previously, the Lord Jesus rebuked the Jews for coming out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take Him (Matthew 26:55). He was certainly no thief, but He allowed Himself to be crucified with and for thieves. Why? Because love compelled Him to "bear the sins of many" (Hebrews 9:28).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Many publicans were thieves and were hated (Luke 3:12-13; Matthew 9:10-13; Matthew 18:17; Luke 19:2, 7). The Lord will cleanse from any sin including theft (1 John 1:9; Isaiah 55:7; Luke 18:13-14; Luke 19:8-9).
  • One of the thieves turned to the Lord in faith while on the cross. How is this only possible because of the Lord’s willingness to die the death of a thief?
  • No thieves shall inherit the kingdom of God, but there will be plenty who were thieves before trusting Christ (1 Corinthians 6:10-11). This is only possible because Christ died in their place.

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank the Lord for dying the death of a thief.
  • Ask God to help you tell other thieves of Christ’s death.

HYMN

Hallelujah, What a Saviour!
