Communication Should Always Edify Others - Ephesians 4:29

Communication Should Always Edify Others - Ephesians 4:29

INTRODUCTION

Our words should never be used by the Devil as weapons to destroy or discourage others. Any problem with our words reveals a problem with our heart: “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). The mouth can exhibit good or bad and our actions reveal the heart of the problem when the Bible says, “out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew 15:19). This is why our words are not always profitable to those who hear them. Yet, God admonishes us to “let no corrupt communication proceed out of” our mouth. Believers are instead encouraged to make sure their words are “good to the use of edifying.” The saint of God should speak words that God can use to build up other saints in the faith.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): The children of Israel were fighting the Philistines and were greatly outnumbered. Jonathan encouraged his armourbearer to have faith in God (1 Samuel 14:6-7). He and his armourbearer started the attack and God gave a great victory. Our words should be like Jonathan’s, helping others to live for God.
  • (For everyone): Do you remember a time when you spoke words that unnecessarily hurt another believer? Did you repent of that sin and seek the forgiveness of that individual?
  • Do your words obey God by ministering to others? Are your words weapons that Satan can use to destroy or tools by which the Lord can build others?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you think before you speak.
  • Ask God to give you words of edification for others.
