Comfort of the Scriptures - Romans 15:4

Comfort of the Scriptures - Romans 15:4

INTRODUCTION

Many people erroneously suggest that the Bible is irrelevant for modern problems. However, the Bible declares that things written aforetime were written for comfort in present troubles. Though it is true that the Bible does not deal specifically with every modern trouble, the work of God in the lives of believers in days gone by can give the comfort necessary to face any trouble. This is one of many reasons why it is imperative that believers read the whole Bible. God’s workings in the lives of Job, Abraham, and Jeremiah can offer just as much comfort as God’s workings in the lives of Paul or John. Whatever the trouble an open Bible and receptive heart is the greatest opportunity for comfort.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) The story of Joseph is comforting because it lets us know that God is in charge no matter what we may be going through. Joseph was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, imprisoned, and forgotten for two years by someone he befriended. None of his troubles were his fault, yet he remained true to God.
  • How has the word of God been a comfort to you in times of weakness? What Bible verses has God used to bring you through some difficult times?
  • If God’s word is a comfort to you, don’t you think it would be a comfort to others? How could you prepare to help others in their times of trouble?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank God for giving you a perfect Bible that offers comfort.
  • Ask God to teach you how to comfort others with the Bible.
