Comfort of the Scriptures - Romans 15:4

Comfort of the Scriptures - Romans 15:4

INTRODUCTION

Far too many people wrongly assume that the Bible lacks relevance in addressing modern problems. However, the Bible declares that things written aforetime were written for comfort in present troubles. Though the Bible does not deal specifically with every modern trouble, the work of God in past believers’ lives offers the comfort necessary to face any trouble. This is one of many reasons why it is imperative that believers read the entire Bible and not limit it to the New Testament or certain epistles within it. God’s workings in the lives of Job, Abraham, and Jeremiah can offer just as much comfort as God’s workings in the lives of Paul or John. No matter the trouble faced, an open Bible with a receptive heart serves as man’s greatest opportunity for experiencing the ever allusive comfort.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): The story of Joseph is comforting because it lets us know that God is in charge no matter what we may experience. Joseph was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, imprisoned, and forgotten in that prison for two more years by someone who promised to help him. None of his troubles were his fault or deserved and yet he remained true to God.
  • (For everyone): How has the word of God been a comfort to you in times of weakness? What Bible verses has God used to bring you through some difficult times?
  • If God’s word is a comfort to you, don’t you think it would be a comfort to others? How could you prepare to help others in their times of trouble?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank God for giving you a perfect Bible that offers comfort.
  • Ask God to teach you how to comfort others with the Bible.
