Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble
Pope Benedict XVI got himself in trouble by quoting a 14th century criticism of the Prophet Muhammad concerning his "command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." This obviously unfounded criticism was met by the usually patient responses of the Islamic world. Five churches were bombed in the West Bank. Another was attacked in Basra. Mobs in India burned effigies of the Pope. A sheikh in Somalia urged Muslims to hunt the Pope down and kill him. An armed Iraqi group vowed to attack the Pope and the Vatican. How dare anyone suggest that Islam tends to violence--especially when those who say so are likely to be put on someone's hit list.
