Be Not Drunk, but Be Filled - Ephesians 5:18

Be Not Drunk, but Be Filled - Ephesians 5:18

INTRODUCTION

Man cannot be drunk with wine and be filled with the Spirit. The two concepts conflict. Man will either be yielded to the control of the Holy Spirit or to the control of alcohol, but cannot be yielded to both at the same time. One is a commandment to avoid sin, and the other is a commandment to yield to righteousness. As such, it should be an easy choice for believers. The choice to indulge in alcoholic beverages is a choice to displease the Saviour, while a choice to yield to the Holy Spirit is a decision that pleases the Lord. No believer should be deceived into believing that he can fill himself with the world’s drink and God’s Spirit. It will not work!

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, God says your body is His temple and that we are not to defile it (make it unclean). Daniel said he would not defile himself with the king's wine which the king offered as a daily provision with meals (Daniel 1:5, 8).
  • What might happen if a person was drunk with wine? What might happen if a person was filled with the Spirit of God? Make a list and see how the two differ.
  • Why is alcohol contrary to God’s will for a person’s life? How will it hinder a believer from serving the Lord to the best of his ability?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to help you choose to be filled with the Spirit.
  • Thank God for preserving you from the evils of alcohol.

HYMN

Have Thine Own Way, Lord!
