What Is It?
The Baptist History Preservation Society is a local church ministry dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the Baptists. Our history can be traced through books and blood, from pulpits to prisons, and from courts to cemeteries. We are trying to preserve this history in the following ways:
- Procuring and restoring rare books and writings
- Restoring and maintaining historic sites and churches
- Erecting and restoring grave markers
- Baptist History Tours
- Preaching and teaching on Baptist History
- Baptist History Museum and Library
For instance, in March of 2003, the Baptist History Preservation Society placed new markers by the graves of two famous Baptist preachers: John Clarke and Obadiah Holmes. These men made significant contributions to our faith as well as to our country. Clarke is the founder of the first Baptist Church in America and is buried in Newport, Rhode Island. Holmes, the second pastor of the church in Newport, was beaten for his Baptist faith. He is buried in Middletown, Rhode Island. The graves of these men have been neglected for years and have become illegible. These fine markers will keep their work and memory fresh to us today. This is just a sample of what has been done and is being done by the Baptist History Preservation Society.
