Avoiding Temptation - Matthew 26:41
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Every believer battling temptation faces an inward struggle. A part of him (his spirit) wants to do right and to please the Lord, while another part of him (his flesh) loves sin and self more than the Saviour. If this struggle goes unchecked, the flesh will certainly win every time. Man’s spirit requires reinforcements in order to win this battle. According to Matthew 26:41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
See All..., two of these resources include watchfulness and prayer. It is imperative for each believer to implement both, for one without the other leaves a person with certain vulnerabilities when temptations arise. Watchfulness demonstrates the saint’s personal responsibility, while prayer demonstrates his need for God’s intervention.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): We constantly have a battle going on inside us (Galatians 5:17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
See All...). Satan would love for us to do wrong (Ephesians 6:11-12 [11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
See All...). We need to watch and pray to ensure the victory (Ephesians 6:18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
See All...; Colossians 4:2Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
See All...). - (For everyone): What are some examples from scripture showing people who fell into temptation because they refused to watch and pray? How can you learn from their failures?
- How do watchfulness and prayer work together in delivering the saint from temptations? In what ways is one weakened with the absence of the other?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to keep you watchful and in prayer.
- Thank God for the privilege and strength of prayer.
