Adam to Noah (Daily Portion 10205)
Scripture Passage:
Genesis 5:1-32 This chapter gives the family line from Adam to Noah, a total of ten generations. This includes man’s time before the flood and comes to a total of 1,656 years.
What Does It Say?
- All the days that Adam lived were _______ hundred and ________ years.
- Enoch lived 65 years and begat __________________.
- All the days of Methuselah were ________ hundred and ________ and ________ years.
- Lamech called his son Noah, saying, This same shall ___________ us concerning our work and _______ of our hands.
- Noah was _________ years old and Noah begat Shem, ______, and ___________.
What Does It Mean?
- Genesis 5:1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
See All... announces, “This is the book of the generations of Adam.” We find lists of “generations” given throughout Genesis and the rest of the Bible. However, there is only one other place where the word “book” is found with the word “generation.” This is in Matthew 1:1The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
See All... which begins, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ.” What is the significance of the two places where this wording occurs? What is the meaning of the person mentioned in each statement (Adam in Genesis and Jesus Christ in Matthew)? Why do you think the first phrase uses “generations” (plural) and the second one uses “generation” (singular)? - God created male and female and “called their name Adam” (Genesis 5:2Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
See All...)? What is the meaning of this? In what way does a woman take the name of a man? - Use a Bible Dictionary to check the meaning of the names Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah. Add up the numbers. Which of these men died the year of the flood? How does that fit in to the meaning of his name?
What Does It Mean to Me?
- Adam had been created in the likeness and image of God (Genesis 1:26-27 [26] And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
[27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
See All...). However, Adam’s son was born in the likeness and image of Adam (Genesis 5:3And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:
See All...). How do we regain the image of God today? See 2 Corinthians 4:4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
See All...; Romans 8:29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
See All...; Galatians 4:19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
See All...; Colossians 3:10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
See All.... What do you think this involves? - During Enoch’s life, he walked with God. Then, he was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:24And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
See All...). Hebrews 11:5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
See All... tells us that this means that Enoch “was translated that he should not see death.” He was taken up into heaven. But before that, he walked with God. What do you think this means? What should we do in order to walk with God?
