Adam to Noah (Daily Portion 10205)

Content Author:
Reagan, David
Scripture Passage:
Genesis 5:1-32

This chapter gives the family line from Adam to Noah, a total of ten generations. This includes man’s time before the flood and comes to a total of 1,656 years.

What Does It Say?

  1. All the days that Adam lived were _______ hundred and ________ years.
  2. Enoch lived 65 years and begat __________________.
  3. All the days of Methuselah were ________ hundred and ________ and ________ years.
  4. Lamech called his son Noah, saying, This same shall ___________ us concerning our work and _______ of our hands.
  5. Noah was _________ years old and Noah begat Shem, ______, and ___________.

What Does It Mean?

  1. Genesis 5:1 announces, “This is the book of the generations of Adam.”  We find lists of “generations” given throughout Genesis and the rest of the Bible. However, there is only one other place where the word “book” is found with the word “generation.” This is in Matthew 1:1 which begins, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ.” What is the significance of the two places where this wording occurs? What is the meaning of the person mentioned in each statement (Adam in Genesis and Jesus Christ in Matthew)? Why do you think the first phrase uses “generations” (plural) and the second one uses “generation” (singular)?
  2. God created male and female and “called their name Adam” (Genesis 5:2)? What is the meaning of this? In what way does a woman take the name of a man?
  3. Use a Bible Dictionary to check the meaning of the names Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah. Add up the numbers. Which of these men died the year of the flood? How does that fit in to the meaning of his name?

What Does It Mean to Me?

  1. Adam had been created in the likeness and image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). However, Adam’s son was born in the likeness and image of Adam (Genesis 5:3). How do we regain the image of God today? See 2 Corinthians 4:4; Romans 8:29; Galatians 4:19; Colossians 3:10. What do you think this involves?
  2. During Enoch’s life, he walked with God. Then, he was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:24). Hebrews 11:5 tells us that this means that Enoch “was translated that he should not see death.” He was taken up into heaven. But before that, he walked with God. What do you think this means? What should we do in order to walk with God?
