A Mouth Speaking Bitterness - Romans 3:14

INTRODUCTION

The Bible says that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). This means that the words proceeding out of our mouths originate in our hearts. When we speak bitter words, it is because there is bitterness within our hearts. David likened bitter words to arrows that pierce the flesh (Psalm 64:3). Our words ought to be “seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6); instead, we often allow our words to pierce through others. We tear people down rather than building them up. Why is this? Because we have a root of bitterness growing inside that finds its way from our hearts into and out of our mouths. Those who demean others generally do so because they are bitter. Attempts to justify this behaviour are fruitless because the Lord knows the root of the problem stems from our heart.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): Joseph's brothers hated him so much that they didn't have a kind word for him. The Bible says they “could not speak peaceably unto him.” Yet, he reacted the way God wanted him to. He forgave his brothers and “spake kindly unto them.” He promised to take care of them when there was very little food. Joseph is a good example from whom we can learn much.
  • (For everyone): Do you allow your words to tear others down? Why do you think you do this? Will you admit that you often do so in demonstration of some root of bitterness that exists within your own soul and life?
  • Explain how our words are likened to arrows? Can you think of people that you have pierced with your words? Have you apologized to them and sought the Lord’s help in removing the bitterness at the heart of the problem?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to show you the bitterness of your heart.
  • Ask the Lord to help your words be seasoned with salt.
