A Conflict in Obedience - Acts 5:29

A Conflict in Obedience - Acts 5:29

INTRODUCTION

We previously alluded to the very real probability of conflicting authorities. What happens when the government tells men that they cannot obey the words of God? What should a lady do when her husband tells her to do something clearly contrary to the scriptures? What should employees do when asked by their employer to disobey a clear command found in the word of God? What should a church do when the preacher departs from the truths of the Bible? These are tough questions, but the Lord did not leave us without answers and guidance. When authorities conflict, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Man’s responsibility in obedience is first and foremost to God. Men should obey those who have been given authority by God so long as those men do not lead contrary to God's precepts.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children):  Ephesians 6:1 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord.” Some children who love the Lord have parents who do not. Some ungodly parents ask their children to steal. God says that is wrong (Exodus 20:15). Whom should the children always obey?
  • (For everyone): What are some areas in your life where authorities might conflict? Is there an authority in your life that tries to lead you to disobey the word of God?
  • What would you do if the government said you could not read the Bible, pray, or go to church anymore? What would you do if your boss told you to drink alcohol at the company gathering?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to give you wisdom in times when authorities conflict.
  • Ask the Lord to give you boldness in such times.
