A Choice to Trust

A Choice to Trust - Psalm 20:7

INTRODUCTION

Trust is an act of the will. The focus of this trust is something that each individual must decide for himself. David expressed this truth when he said, "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God" (Psalm 20:7). David expressed only a few of many things upon which people might trust, others might trust in vanity (Isaiah 59:4), others in lies (Jeremiah 7:8), and others in riches (1 Timothy 6:17). No individual is forced to trust in the Lord, nor is he or she forced to trust in the things of this world. At the same time, it must be understood that trust cannot be divided. A person cannot trust in vanity, riches, or lies while trusting in the Lord.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Job chose to trust God when he lost his family, his health, and his wealth (Job 13:15a). Three Hebrew men trusted God when faced with a burning, fiery furnace (Daniel 3:17-18). David chose to trust God when he was afraid ((Psalm 56:3-4). Consider Ruth's choice: Ruth 1:16; Ruth 2:11-12.
  • What are some things upon which you rely? Have any of those things become the recipient of your trust? What will happen when, or if, those things are removed?
  • The choice of trust is not a onetime decision. How often do you commit to trusting the Lord, only to find that your trust has moved to the things of the world?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you examine the recipients of your trust.
  • Ask the Lord to help you to be conscious of your trust.
