When the Righteous Are in Authority - Proverbs 29:2
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The nature of the individual in authority affects everyone under that authority. When a nation, congregation, or family is ruled by one that is wicked, the people mourn. The same people under the authority of a righteous ruler would rejoice. When Pharaoh ruled over the people of God in Egypt, their lives were made bitter with hard bondage (Exodus 1:8-14 [8] Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
[9] And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
[10] Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
[11] Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
[12] But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
[13] And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
[14] And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Nehemiah was a godly governor who led God's people in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. The people were happy (Nehemiah 8:9-13 [9] And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
[10] Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
[11] So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.
[12] And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
[13] And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
See All..., Nehemiah 12:27And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

Under wicked king Nebuchadnezzar, the people lived in fear (Daniel 5:18-19 [18] O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour: [19] And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
See All...). - How does the nature of the leader of our country affect the people who live in this country? How would it change things if he followed the Lord?
- Name some righteous kings in the Bible. How did their authority affect the people? Name some wicked kings in the Bible. How did their authority affect the people?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to restore righteous authority to our country.
- Ask God to protect His people from wicked authority.
HYMN
My Country, ‘Tis of Thee
