What Is Jealousy? - Deuteronomy 32:16
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Historically, the word jealous is connected to the word zeal . Unfortunately, the world has limited man’s understanding of jealousy to that of a detestable sin. The Bible student understands that jealousy cannot always be sinful, because God is a jealous God (Nahum 1:2God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
See All...). A scriptural study proves that jealousy can be righteous or wicked depending upon in whose breast it dwells. In a very basic sense, jealousy is the unwillingness on one’s part to share or rival with anything or anyone else. In the case of man, it can be sinful and lead to other sinful practices. In the case of the Lord, it is His righteous desire to be man’s One true and living God, and drives Him to just judgment.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God will not share the glory or praise due Him with anyone (Isaiah 42:8I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
See All...). When we want our own way, we place ourselves ahead of Him and are telling Him we are more worthy and important than He is. This is idolatry and should be guarded against (1 Corinthians 10:14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
See All...; 1 John 5:21Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
See All...). - Why is it important to learn scriptural definitions of words found within the Bible? How could it mislead you if you accepted the common thinking on jealousy?
- Is God’s jealousy just? If so, why? Can man’s jealousy be just? In what ways could jealousy be right and just in men? How can one know the difference?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to give you a scriptural understanding of jealousy.
- Ask the Lord to teach you when it is acceptable to be jealous.
