What Is Death? - 1 Thessalonians 5:23
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The Bible teaches that every man, woman, boy, and girl is made up of three parts. Those three parts are known as spirit, soul, and body. The body is the part of man that can be seen by others. It is the shell in which the real person lives. A man’s spirit is the part of him that communicates with God. Prior to salvation, this spirit is dead and must be quickened. A man’s soul is the real him. It is the part that goes on to exist in eternity. The Bible gives two circumstances that truly define death: the departure of the soul (Genesis 35:18And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) James 2:26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
See All... says that "the body without the spirit is dead." Read about Isaac for an example (Genesis 35:29And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
See All...). When the widow's son died, his spirit and soul left his body (1 Kings 17:17And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.
See All..., 19, 21-23). - Study the three parts of man as they appear in scripture. Does the Bible often use the word soul to describe the actual people? What does the Bible say about the spirit of man?
- Why is it important to be able to distinguish between the three parts of man? Which two are more closely connected and at times difficult to distinguish?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to give you additional light on death as you study.
- Thank God for not leaving you without witness on what death is.
