What Are You Listening To? - 1 Timothy 4:6-7

What Are You Listening To? - 1 Timothy 4:6-7

INTRODUCTION

The words that enter a man’s ears eventually fill his heart and mind. It is, therefore, not only crucial that a man guard the words that exit his mouth, but likewise, the words that enter his ears. Paul understood this and sought to warn his son in the faith, Timothy. In one place, Paul warned Timothy to "refuse profane and old wives’ fables" (1 Timothy 4:7). Later in the same epistle, he told Timothy to avoid "profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called" (1 Timothy 6:20). Others had apparently given heed to these things, and in doing so they had "erred concerning the faith" (1 Timothy 6:21). Paul had no desire to see the same outcome for Timothy.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) The most important thing you will ever hear is the word of God (Romans 10:17; 2 Timothy 3:15). Mary knew that (Luke 10:38-42). It will help you live for the Lord (Psalm 119:9). You will be blessed by not listening to the ungodly (Psalm 1:1).
  • Read 2 Timothy 2:16. What happens when men refuse to "shun profane and vain babblings"? Read 2 Timothy 2:15. To what should you give heed in the lieu of "profane and vain babblings"?
  • The words you permit to enter your ears will eventually control your heart and mind. How should this cause you to diligently guard your ears?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to give you wisdom to know what you need to hear.
  • Thank the Lord for giving you pure words in the scripture.
