We Can Carry Nothing Out - 1 Timothy 6:7
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Job stated that he came out of his mother’s womb naked and would leave this world in like manner (Job 1:21And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
See All...). He would have understood what Paul meant when he said, "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." Solomon spoke of the vanity of labouring his whole life just to leave his labour to a fool (Ecclesiastes 2:17-21 [17] Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
[18] Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
[19] And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
[20] Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
[21] For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
See All...). This was not meant to suggest that man should foolishly spend the wealth for which he laboured before leaving this world, but it should be a reminder that men should not foolishly hold on to wealth for a day that may never come. One must do his part before death, because he can carry nothing with him into death.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) Saved and lost alike take nothing into eternity (Psalm 49:10For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
See All..., 16-17). Read Luke 16:19-26 [19] There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, [21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. [24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. [25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
See All.... Did the rich man take his riches? Did they help him? Why not use wisely what God gives us now as did the Philippians (Philippians 4:15-17
See All...), or Dorcas (Acts 9:39Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
See All...)? - What are some things you can do right now that you will not be able to do when you leave this world? How will your control over your finances change at death?
- Are you foolishly spending your money because of the knowledge that you cannot take it with you? How would the Lord have you to change your approach?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God for wisdom on how and when to spend your wealth.
- Ask the Lord to remind you that you can take nothing with you.
