Vain Conversation Received by Tradition - 1 Peter 1:18

Vain Conversation Received by Tradition - 1 Peter 1:18

INTRODUCTION

The traditions of men produce vain lives. According to scripture, the word conversation means much more than merely words being spoken from one person to another, rather, it is the way in which a person lives his life (2 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Peter 3:1). As such, those who build their lives upon the traditions of men may very well work hard and be faithful, but it is all for naught because their lives are built upon vanity. Sadly, some of the most faithful adherers to religion are those who are promoting the traditions of men from which they will gain no benefits in eternity. The only conversation that proves fruitful in eternity is the one built upon the commandments of God.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Many teach that we get to heaven by doing good works. The only "work" we must do is to believe (John 6:28-29; 1 John 3:23a). Good works follow faith (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5-8). If one doesn't believe first, works will be worthless (Matthew 7:21-23).
  • How can a life based upon tradition be a life of vanity? How can it be more active and yet less fruitful? What can you do to make sure that your life counts in eternity?
  • What are some things that people do in the name of religion that will leave them without reward? How will some people work their whole lives only to end up in hell?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help your life count for something.
  • Thank the Lord for giving you His word by which you can live.
