The Vanity of Pleasure - Ecclesiastes 2:1
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Pleasure promises lasting joys, but in the end it delivers nothing more than a temporary happiness that eventually leaves the partaker emptier than if he had never sought the pleasure. James’ understanding of this truth is seen when he declared, "Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton" (James 5:5Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
See All...). Paul joined in as he said of widows, "she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth" (1 Timothy 5:6But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
See All...). Pleasure offers no lasting fulfillment. In John 4:13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
See All..., the Lord said, "Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again" and so it is with pleasure. Satisfaction, fulfillment, joy, and life only come through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) The wordly pleasures we see, hear, do, or have, never satisfy. They are never enough (Ecclesiastes 1:8All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
See All...; Ecclesiastes 5:10He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
See All...; Ecclesiastes 6:7All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
See All...). Only the Lord can meet our need of satisfaction (Psalm 16:11Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
See All...; Psalm 107:9For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
See All...). - Has there ever been a pleasurable event you were looking forward to that afterwards left you less than fulfilled? Why is it that pleasure cannot satisfy you long term?
- With pleasure, man must continually seek the latest and greatest. How is this different than a personal relationship with the Lord?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask the Lord to help you see the vanity of pleasure.
- Ask God for the lasting joys that come only from Him.
