The Product of Chastening - Hebrews 12:11

The Product of Chastening - Hebrews 12:11

INTRODUCTION

Biblical chastening has righteousness as its desired outcome. The process itself may be grievous for the one being chastened, but "afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." Though the process is anything but peaceful, the outcome is peace. A careful look at the word chasten will provide this information. The word chasten has as its root the word chaste . The end goal for anyone being chastened is that they would be chaste. It is intended to be a purification process that corrects the wrongs for which it was initially implemented. It always leaves the enduring recipient stronger and purer than before the process began.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) God wants us to have the right desires (Proverbs 11:23a). This is done through knowing and obeying His word (Psalm 119:138; Psalm 19:8a, 11a). When we sin, God wants our hearts right with Him. This is done through chastening (Psalm 119:67, 71).
  • Have you ever experienced the chastening of the Lord for a particular sin? What was the outcome of the chastening? Were you closer to God in the end?
  • Would you consider the process of chastening to be an enjoyable one? Would you consider the end result to be worth any troubles faced by the process?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to give you a deeper understanding of chastening.
  • Ask God to help you see His desired outcome of chastening.
