The Good Samaritan: A Hospitable Man - Luke 10:30-35
See All...
INTRODUCTION
The story of the good Samaritan is a wonderful illustration of hospitality. The Lord Jesus told of a man who began a trip to Jericho. While on his way, he “fell among thieves” (Luke 10:30And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
See All...) who robbed him, stripped him of his clothes, and wounded him. When they were finished, they left this man for dead. The Lord then told of some men who passed by but were unwilling to help the dying man. Finally, a Samaritan, a people not generally known for their friendship with the Jews, stopped to help. He saw the wounded, dying man and had compassion on him. The Samaritan took the man, “bound up his wounds . . . brought him to an inn, and took care of him” (Luke 10:34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
See All...). Even when the Samaritan left, he provided additional monies to the inn keeper to insure that the injured man would be cared for as he finished his recovery. The good Samaritan man also assured the innkeeper that he would cover any additional funds necessary.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For children): David's men found an Egyptian in a field. He was sick and David gave him food and water before he knew anything about him. He was a slave to David's enemies. Because of David's care, the slave gave David valuable information (1 Samuel 30:11-15).
- (For everyone): Samaritans and Jews were not necessarily friendly toward one another, yet the Samaritan helped the wounded man although he knew that he was a Jew. What does this teach us about hospitality?
- What are some ways in which you can show hospitality to others in your church? What are ways you can show hospitality to those in your family or your community?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Thank the Lord for those who have been hospitable toward you.
- Ask the Lord to help you help others when they have need.
