I Was Envious When I Saw - Psalm 73:3-5

I Was Envious When I Saw - Psalm 73:3-5

INTRODUCTION

In this life, sentence against an evil work is not always executed speedily (Ecclesiastes 8:11). At times, it seems as though the wicked can live any way they desire, and do so without consequence. In fact, there are times that it seems as though the wicked are rewarded for their wickedness while the righteous are punished for their diligence to live holy. If the believer is not careful, he can get his eyes off the Lord and become envious of the wicked. He can see that he is often troubled because of his own righteousness, while the wicked appears to be helped in spite of his wickedness. This dilemma has caused many to fall, who once had a strong desire to please God.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Hannah, who was childless, could have become envious at Peninnah who had children. Peninnah mocked Hannah because of her barrenness. Even though this hurt Hannah, she did not cause trouble but prayed to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:2-20).
  • Asaph said he was envious because of something he "saw." Are things always as they seem through your eyes? Why is it important to guard against trusting what you perceive to be true?
  • How can you be sure to temper the perception you have? What is our authority for truth? How can that authority keep you from being tempted to envy the wicked?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God for wisdom to see the end of the wicked.
  • Thank the Lord for helping you overcome envy.

HYMN

Yield Not to Temptation
