Hold the Traditions - 2 Thessalonians 2:15

Hold the Traditions - 2 Thessalonians 2:15

INTRODUCTION

The present generation has been handed some wonderful traditions. Some are directly found in scripture while others are founded upon scriptural principles. Paul admonished believers at Thessalonica to "hold" these traditions. In like manner, believers today ought to be diligent to continue godly traditions. Those that are directly taken from scripture are a given, but there are others that are also important. No Bible verse specifically states believers should attend a midweek worship service, but it is certainly a scriptural tradition (Hebrews 10:25). In like manner, no Bible verse indicates that the early church held Sunday School, yet it is a very scriptural tradition (2 Timothy 2:15).

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Even though the Bible doesn't say how often we take the Lord's Supper, it was a tradition Paul "received" from God and "delivered" to the Corinthians and was supposed to be followed. We should maintain such traditions.
  • (For everyone) What are some traditions you hold dear that can be found in scripture? What are some scriptural traditions you hold that might not be specifically commanded in scripture?
  • What determines whether or not a tradition crosses the line into the realm of unscriptural? How can one protect himself from believing such traditions?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Thank the Lord for scriptural traditions.
  • Ask God for strength to hold the right traditions.
