His Name Is Jealous - Exodus 34:14
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Biblically speaking, a man’s name is equal to his character (Proverbs 22:1A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
See All...). God’s character is often defined by His name. Faithful and true are two words that describe the very nature of God, but they are also names by which the Son of God will be called at His second advent (Revelation 19:11And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
See All...). Even the name Jesus was associated with the person and work of our Lord (Matthew 1:21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
See All...). These names, and many more like them, are well known to believers, but few know that the Lord’s name is also said to be Jealous . Why? Because that is who He is. He is the One true and living God who demands man’s sole attention. Just as He is Faithful and True , He is also Jealous .
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) God does not want us to put anything or anyone before Him. He is jealous of such things (2 Chronicles 16:7-9 [7] And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand.
[8] Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
[9] For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
See All...; 2 Kings 1:2-4 [2] And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease. [3] But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? [4] Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.
See All...). David knew to whom to go (1 Chronicles 14:8-16 [8] And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them. [9] And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. [10] And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? And wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand. [11] So they came up to Baalperazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baalperazim. [12] And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire. [13] And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley. [14] Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. [15] And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines. [16] David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.
See All...) as did Hezekiah (2 Kings 19:14-16 [14] And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. [15] And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth. [16] LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
See All...; 2 Kings 20:1-3 [1] In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. [2] Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying, [3] I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
See All...). - What are some ways in which you put other things before the Lord? How can you do this with your time, strength, and money? How would this provoke the Lord to jealousy?
- Why do men give more time and attention to names like Faithful and True while neglecting the fact that the Lord’s name is Jealous? What does this suggest about man?
PRAYER NEEDS
- Ask God to teach you the beauties of His name.
- Ask the Lord to help you live for His pleasure.
