Envy or Godly Fear - Proverbs 23:17

Envy or Godly Fear - Proverbs 23:17

INTRODUCTION

Life is full of opposing concepts that refuse to coexist such as truth and lies, love and hate, holiness and sin. Some of these conflicts are well-known and readily understood, but the Bible indicates that a similar conflict exists between envy and the fear of the Lord. When a man looks upon the life of the wicked with envy, he ceases to walk in the fear of the Lord. Why? Perhaps it is because a man who fears the Lord looks ahead to the coming judgment when he will stand before the Lord and he has no desire to have the lot of the wicked when it comes to judgment. Regardless, man has a choice to make, does he walk in the fear of the Lord or does he take his eyes off the Lord to envy the wicked?

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) A neighbourhood boy gets lots of toys by stealing. You may be envious of the toys, but you remember Exodus 20:15 and know you shouldn't steal. Fearing God is hating evil (Proverbs 8:13) and realizing no one gets by with sin (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).
  • Why is it impossible to walk in the fear of the Lord and envy others? What does it mean to envy? What does it mean to walk in the fear of the Lord?
  • Do you look at others and wish that you could live like they live or have what they have? Do the lives of those people please God? Will the judgment be a pleasant time for them?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask God to help you choose the fear of the Lord.
  • Ask the Lord to help you see the dangers of choosing envy.
